Winnipeg, MB - Beginning at 8:00 p.m., on Tuesday, August 2 and continuing until Thursday, August 4 at 8:00 a.m., a newly-rehabilitated major water feeder main that crosses the Red River near the Chief Peguis Trail will be returned to full service. While discoloured water is not expected as a result of the work, citizens in the East Kildonan, North Kildonan, West Kildonan and Garden City areas are encouraged to check for discoloured water before using their water during this time. Work on the feeder main will be done overnight to minimize the impact it may have on customers.
Any time there is a major change in the rate or direction of water flow in water mains, sediment can loosen and be released into the water.
A feeder main is a large pressurized water pipe that carries water from a pumping station to the water main network. This new section of feeder main replaces an old section that needed repairs and connects an important part of the regional water supply system. The project cost $4 million, involved the use of specialized horizontal drilling equipment and will ensure high quality water service is maintained in the long term as Winnipeg continues to grow.
If citizens do experience discoloured water, they are encouraged to make a report to 311 by phone at 311 or by email at 311@winnipeg.ca. More information about what to do if you notice discoloured water in your taps is available at City of Winnipeg - Discoloured Water FAQ.
