Winnipeg, MB - The annual TD Summer Reading Club starts Monday, June 24, at all branches of Winnipeg Public Library and ends Friday, August 9. Children are invited to drop in to any branch and sign up for this year's Club. Families of all ages are also invited to take part in the many programs being offered.

What is the TD Summer Reading Club?
The TD Summer Reading Club is a national literacy initiative for children up to age 12. Children choose books and read for the fun of it, while improving reading skills and reducing summer learning loss. In 2012, nearly 6,000 children signed up for the Club and there were over 5,300 participants in summer programs and workshops.

How it works:
Children sign up at any branch of Winnipeg Public Library for a free reading kit with activity booklet, stickers and a log book. Participants track the days they read and collect ballots for prize draws as they progress through their reading logs. Pre-readers participate by tracking days they are read to.

Programs for children, teens and families:
This year's TD Summer Reading Club theme of Go! has inspired a wide range of creative and engaging programs for children and families but the Library fun doesn't stop there! Winnipeg Public Library is offering additional programming and special events for teens and families in July and August. In total, Winnipeg Public Library has over 150 free programs for children, teens and families this summer!

  • Story, game and craft programs for children and families. Highlights include over 75 school-age and pre-school programs, Lego Block Parties and Family Literacy Fun Days.
  • Highlights for tween (ages 9-12) and teens include photo editing and creative writing workshops, and programs on writing for film and video production
  • TD Summer Reading Club special performances for families by Jake Chenier, Ted Longbottom and magician Ryan Price.
  • Guest readings with the Winnipeg Goldeyes, and Library Night at the Ballpark, on August 1.

Special TD Summer Reading Club Kick-off Event:
Everyone is welcome to attend a special TD Summer Reading Club launch at Millennium Library, 251 Donald Street on Saturday June 22 at 10:30 a.m.

Goldie, and several members of the Goldeyes, will be in attendance to kick-off this year’s Club. There will be baseball stories, trivia, and crafts. Mr. Mark the One Man Band will bring a lively musical performance to the celebration. Children can sign up and be the first to receive their Club kits, too.

Go to Winnipeg Public Library or pick up a copy of the summer issue of @ The Library for all the details on this year's TD Summer Reading Club.
