WINNIPEG, MB - July 20, 2012 - Beginning Monday, July 23, 2012, the City of Winnipeg Insect Control Branch will treat American Elm trees on public property utilizing Dursban Turf® (Chlorpyrifos) - weather permitting. The program is intended to control elm bark beetles, the carriers of Dutch Elm Disease (DED).

Spraying of trees will occur between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, weather permitting.

Treatment will take place in various locations throughout the city where DED has claimed American Elm trees. Also, as a preventative measure the City treats areas with large stands of American Elms on a two year rotational basis. This year these areas include:

  • Boulevard trees in portions of Insect Management Areas 10, 11, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 38, 40 and 41.

Treatment will be conducted utilizing Dursban Turf® (Chlorpyrifos), a chemical product, which is sprayed from portable sprayers directly onto the lower 50cm of the tree trunk. This product has been approved for use in Canada by Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency, and will be used in accordance with federally approved label directions by licensed pesticide applicators.

Citizens may register for email notification regarding defoliator and/or adult mosquito and/or gypsy moth control programs by visiting the Insect Control website. They can also register for telephone notification by calling 311 and leaving their name, address and phone number. Once registered, residents will receive automated phone or email notification identifying the area(s) of the City in which the Insect Control crews are intending to work, weather permitting.
