WINNIPEG - A formal dedication and ceremonial parade will be held at the Valour Road Commemorative Plaza (Sargent Avenue at Valour Road) on Sunday, May 27 at 2:00 p.m. The event marks the completion and installation of bronze plaques commemorating the three former residents of Pine Street, now called Valour Road, who received the Victoria Cross for their valour during the First World War.
The plaques have been installed through fundraising efforts of the Cameron Association in Canada, The Cameron Regimental Foundation, The Royal Winnipeg Rifles Senate, The Governor General's Foot Guards, a private donation from Bob Williams and with additional financial support from the Province of Manitoba. A fourth plaque, outlining the Valour Road story, was funded by the City of Winnipeg through a Land Dedication Reserve Fund grant from Councillor Harvey Smith and the City Centre Community Committee.
Designed by local landscape architect David Wagner, the Valour Road Commemorative Plaza was originally built in 2005 through the City of Winnipeg and Province of Manitoba Building Communities Initiative. The plaza is designed in the shape of the Victoria Cross and includes landscaping, a parade area for military ceremonies and steel silhouettes of the three First World War soldiers.
The project also saw the installation of decorative streetscape poles and signage along Valour Road highlighting this significant part of Winnipeg and Canadian history. In 2006, the Valour Road project won a regional design award from the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects.
