WINNIPEG - April 05, 2012 - Mayor Sam Katz and Councillor Paula Havixbeck, the Councillor responsible for Sponsor Winnipeg, were joined today by Steve Shrout, Vice-president of Metro News and Rod Chivers, Distribution Manager for the Metro News in the City's skywalk, to announce a three-year Sponsorship agreement with the Metro News worth $225,000.

"I am pleased that Metro News is jumping on board as a new partner of the Sponsor Winnipeg program," said Mayor Katz. "Through generous contributions from civic-minded individuals, organizations and the private sector, this innovative program grows and inspires others to participate as well."

"When we came to the city a year ago we immediately sponsored the downtown Spirit bus routes and the Downtown BIZ clean teams. We're continuing our partnership with the people of Winnipeg with our latest sponsorship, the Winnipeg Downtown Walkways. We are excited to partner with the City of Winnipeg and know that active Winnipeggers benefit as a result" said Steve Shrout, Vice-president of Metro News.

In exchange for this sponsorship, the Metro will receive exclusive placement of their newspaper racks in five locations in the skywalk that are under the City's jurisdiction. These locations will be clearly identified by decal signage at each of the locations. In addition to the signage, Metro personnel will be at these locations Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. to personally distribute the Metro News to Winnipeggers.

Sponsor Winnipeg is a partnership program which provides public-spirited individuals, businesses, corporations, foundations and community groups with opportunities to sponsor a wide variety of City of Winnipeg assets and programs, in return for naming rights, legacy opportunities and other marketing benefits associated with sponsorship of City facilities and services. This continuing program supports the City's commitment to deliver high quality services to the citizens of Winnipeg by generating new revenue sources.

Since the launch of Sponsor Winnipeg, the City has generated over $2 million to enhance civic programs and services.
