Winnipeg Police Service Media Release
For Immediate Release
Vehicle Robbery Arrests
On April 24, 2010 at approximately 2:40 a.m., a group of male suspects attended to the area of the 400 block of Maryland Street where they confronted an 18 year old male victim who had just arrived in his vehicle.
The suspects surrounded the victim and proceeded to damage the victim’s vehicle by smashing out a window. It was at this time the victim was bear sprayed and physically removed from the vehicle. The suspects continued to assault the victim numerous times about the body. The victim ran off and the suspects fled in the vehicle.
The victim was treated in hospital for upper body injuries. He has since been released.
At approximately 3:40 a.m., the suspects, still in possession of the stolen vehicle collided with a vehicle in the area of the 400 block of Ross Avenue and fled the area.
A short time later, a cyclist in the area of Flora Avenue and Powers Street was struck by the stolen vehicle. He sustained non-life threatening injuries.
A second group of cyclists were targeted by the suspects at which time they fled the area without injury.
Members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the area at which time the driver of the stolen vehicle sped off at a high rate of speed having no regard for public safety.
Due to the manner of driving, the suspects lost control of the vehicle in the area of Pacific Avenue and Isabel Street where three people were taken into custody.
A 15 year old male and 16 year old male have been charged with the following offences:
Both males have been charged with: Robbery with a Weapon.
In addition, the 15 year old male has been charged with the following: Flight from Police Officer, Dangerous Operation – Motor Vehicle, Fail to Remain at the Scene of an Accident and Exchange Particulars x 2 and Assault with a Weapon.
The investigation is continuing.
Homicide Arrest
On April 24, 2010 at approximately 4:00 a.m., Uniform members responded to the area of Powers Street and Pritchard Avenue regarding a stabbing incident.
Attending members located the victim, Ronnie Jeffery KAKEGAMICK, 21 years of Winnipeg with several stab wounds to the upper body. The victim was transported to hospital where he later succumbed to injuries.
A 17 year old male has been charged with 2nd degree Murder and detained at the Manitoba Youth Centre.
Assault with a Weapon Arrests
On April 25, 2010 at approximately 2:15 a.m., Uniform members were dispatched to the 200 block of Reitta Street regarding a weapon related incident.
The investigation has revealed that three adult male victims came into contact with another group of males at which time a physical altercation took place.
Attending members located three suspects attempting to flee the area and placed them under arrest. They have been charged with a variety of offences and remain in custody at this time.
The three victims sustained serious injuries as a result of the incident. Two of the victims remain in hospital in serious but stable condition. The third victim is in stable condition.
Suspicious Vehicle
On April 16, 2010 at approximately 4:15 p.m. a 10 year old female was approached by a suspicious male operating a vehicle in the Transcona area of Winnipeg. The driver made an inappropriate gesture toward the victim and subsequently fled the area.
The victim made her way home unharmed.
The suspect is described as: Male, Caucasian, late teens, early 20’s, short hair.
The suspect vehicle is described as: Small, black car.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact police.
Homicide Investigation
On Sunday, April 18, 2010, the Winnipeg Police Service released information regarding the homicide of 34 year old Ricky Martin LATHLIN.
The investigation by the Homicide Unit has resulted in the arrest of 25 year old Jonathan BOYER of Winnipeg, 26 year old Roland Edward KLYNE (also known as CHARTRAND) of Winnipeg and 38 year old James Michael HENRY of Winnipeg.
They have been charged with Manslaughter in connection with the incident and detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
The investigation is continuing.
Motor Vehicle Collision Involving a Stolen Police Vehicle - Update
On Friday, April 23, 2010 at approximately 9:00 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service became involved in a motor vehicle collision investigating involving a police vehicle in the 1200 block of Alexander Avenue.
The investigation has revealed that a male that was being detained in custody in the rear of the vehicle allegedly made his way to the driver’s seat of the vehicle. He engaged the vehicle in drive and while attempting to flee down a rear lane, struck a concrete fence.
The suspect was conveyed to hospital in stable condition. One police member sustained non life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision and is being treated in hospital.
Torben Timothy CAMPBELL, 28 years of No Fixed Address has been charged with the following offences: Theft Over $5000.00, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Bodily Harm, Utter Threats x 2, Escape lawful Custody, Drive without a Licence, Assault Peace Officer, Public Mischief and Fail to Comply with Condition of recognizance.
He has been detained in custody.
Missing Person - Bethany MASON - Located
The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance in locating a 12 year old female, Bethany MASON.
MASON was last seen on April 22, 2010 at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the area of the 1000 block of McPhillips Street.
The Winnipeg Police Service considers MASON to be a child in need of protection as she is at high risk of being exploited or victimized and investigators are concerned for her well-being.
MASON is described as Aboriginal, 5’4, 110lbs, shoulder length black hair, brown eyes and wine coloured glasses. MASON was last seen wearing a black/blue hooded sweater, blue shirt, blue denim shorts and black Converse runners.
Anyone with information regarding MASON’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Winnipeg Police Service Missing Persons Unit at 204-986-6250.
Missing Person - Jay Lynn MCIVOR
The St. Pierre RCMP and Winnipeg Police Service are requesting the public’s assistance in locating a 13 year old female, Jay Lynn MCIVOR.
MCIVOR was last seen on April 26th, 2010 in the Osborne Village area. She is also known to frequent the Downtown and North End areas of Winnipeg.
The Winnipeg Police Service considers MCIVOR to be a child in need of protection as she is at high risk of being exploited or victimized and investigators are concerned for her well-being.
MCIVOR is described as: Aboriginal, 5’7” tall, 130 lbs, shoulder length brown hair, average build. She was last seen wearing a black jacket, pink and white runners, gold belt and a small black back pack/purse.
Anyone with information regarding MCIVOR’s whereabouts is asked to contact the St. Pierre RCMP Detachment at 204-433-7433 or the Winnipeg Police Service Missing Persons Unit at 204-986-6250.
