Winnipeg Police Service Media Release
For Immediate Release
Weapon – Arrest
On June 28th, 2008, shortly after 8:00 P.M., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a business in the 300 block of Nairn Avenue in regards to a male armed with a machete. The male fled prior to police.
Around 9:30 P.M. police were notified the male was now at a residence in the 200 block of Watt Street armed with a Bow and Arrow.
The area around this residence was secured by police with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team the male was removed safely from the house and apprehended within about 30 minutes.
An 18 year old male is now facing charges of Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose.
He was released on a Promise to Appear.
Fire
On June 29th, 2008, shortly after 4:00 A.M., Emergency Services Units responded to a fire in the 100 block of Lorne Avenue. The fire was extinguished after causing an estimated $200,000.00 in damage to the structure and contents.
A 19 year old male suffering from severe burns was conveyed to hospital where he remains in critical condition.
The Arson Strike Force is currently investigating.
Robbery
On June 29th, 2008, shortly after 2:30 A.M., a 22 year old Taxi driver picked up two fares from the area of Notre Dame and Sherbrook Street and was driving them to the 300 block of Victor Street.
Upon arriving to the area the male in the front seat produced a knife and demanded the driver’s money and the male in the back seat began punching the driver. The driver began to struggle with the males at which time they threatened to shoot him. The driver accelerated quickly and collided with a tree causing the vehicle airbags to deploy. The suspects fled the vehicle with the driver’s money and cell phone.
The male with the knife is described as being Caucasian, 24-25 years of age, with a slim build, 5’6-7” tall, unshaven and wearing a black shirt and brown beaded necklace.
The second male is described as being Black, 22-23 years of age, 5’2-4” tall with a stocky build.
The Taxi driver received minor upper body injuries.
The Division #11 Crime Unit is investigating.
Motor Vehicle Collision
On June 28th, 2008, shortly after 8:00 P.M., a 61 year old female was the driver of a vehicle travelling south bound on Keewatin at a high rate of speed when she lost control striking a light standard knocking it down. The vehicle continued through a wooden fence across a parking lot and into a building in the 1600 block of Notre Dame Avenue, coming to a rest approximately 25 feet inside the building.
The female was conveyed to hospital with minor injuries.
Damage to the building is estimated to be in excess of $50,000.00.
This incident is still being investigated and no other information is available.
