Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision Update
On Saturday morning, March 29th, 2008, shortly after 3:00 a.m. police received a report of two vehicles ramming each other in the area of the first one hundred block of Edmonton Street. A patrolling cruiser car observed the suspect vehicles but did not have time to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle fled from the area.
Shortly before 3:30 a.m. members of the Winnipeg Police Service attended to the intersection of Portage Avenue and Maryland Street as a result of a serious motor vehicle collision. Investigation would reveal that the Chevrolet Avalanche involved in the collision was one of the vehicles previously witnessed on Edmonton Street. The second vehicle, a Chevrolet Silverado, was later recovered by police.
The driver of the taxi was fatally injured in the collision and an occupant of the sport utility vehicle who was ejected from the vehicle remains in critical condition. Three other occupants of the stolen vehicle remain in serious condition at this time. The passenger from the taxi has been treated and released from hospital.
The investigation has revealed that the male ejected from the sport utility vehicle was struck by a vehicle travelling westbound on Portage Avenue shortly afterwards. The driver of the vehicle then fled the scene. It is believed that there was at least one passenger in the vehicle.
The outstanding vehicle that struck the male is described as a dark red or maroon coloured four door sedan, similar in make to an older model Dodge Neon. The vehicle also struck the median and it is believed that there may be visible damage on the vehicle. Investigation to identify this vehicle and a driver are continuing by the Central Traffic Unit.
