Winnipeg Police Service Media Release
For Immediate Release
Motor Vehicle Collision
On March 30th, 2007 shortly before 3:00 a.m. a 1998 Dodge Neon traveling in the area of McPhillips Street and Pacific Avenue collided with a taxi cab. It is believed that the Dodge Neon traveled westbound on Pacific Avenue onto McPhillips Street where it collided with a northbound taxi cab and into a telephone pole.
It appears at this time that there were three occupants in the Dodge Neon and six passengers and the driver in the taxi cab. A 20 year old female passenger in the Dodge Neon was taken to hospital in critical condition where she succumbed to her injuries. It appears at this time that all other persons involved are in stable condition.
The investigation is being conducted by the Winnipeg Police Service Traffic Collision Investigation Section.
Sexual Assault
On March 28th, 2007, at approximately 1:00 p.m. a 15 year old female was at home alone at an address in the 300 block of King Edward Street when a lone male forced entry into the home. The suspect confronted the victim and seriously sexually assaulted her and fled the area. The victim was treated in hospital and released.
The suspect is described as being in his mid forties, 5'6”-5'7”, heavy build, brown hair with some grey, brown eyes with a deep voice. The suspect was wearing a bomber style jacket with a white stripe across the front, old faded jeans, new skater type shoes with a design on the side, a watch with a black leather strap, brown wire framed glasses and wearing a black balaclava. The suspect also wore latex gloves.
The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting anyone who may have information regarding this incident or the identity of this suspect to contact the Sex Crimes Unit at 204-986-6245.
Break and Enter Arrest
As a result of an ongoing investigation being conducted by the District 6 Crime Unit into a number of break and enters in the Wellington Crescent, Roslyn Road and Evergreen Place areas, Carlos Felipe OLIVEIRA, 29 years of age of no fixed address has been arrested and has been charged with Break and Enter With Intent X 6, Break, Enter and Theft, Possession of Goods Obtained by Crime Under $5000.00 and Possess Break and Enter Instruments.
It is alleged that the accused entered apartment buildings with parkades and would steal vehicles and forcibly enter vehicles stealing anything of value.
Break and Enter Arrest
Between June 28th, 2005 and March 26th, 2007, numerous businesses were broken into throughout Winnipeg resulting in cash and merchandise stolen. One business in rural Manitoba was also broken into resulting in damage to the building and cash stolen.
On March 26th, 2007 at 5:00 a.m., uniform members attended to an alarm at a video store in the 1000 block of Portage Avenue and apprehended three suspects in connection with the break-in.
An estimated total of $ 310,000.00 in cash and merchandise was stolen and an estimated total of $220,000.00 in damage was caused as a result of the break-ins.
Further investigation by Division 11 detectives has resulted in one of the suspects being charged with the previous break-ins.
Gavin John BRUCE has been charged with Break and Enter X 29 and Possession of Break-In Instruments.
Melvin Edwin SANFORD, 25 years of age, has been charged with one count of Break and Enter, Possession of Break-In Instruments and Failure to Comply with the Conditions of a Recognizance.
DJ Lee NORMAND, 18 years of age, has been charged with Break and Enter and Possession of Break-In Instruments.
All three males were detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
Criminal Records Check Fee Increase
Effective Monday, April 2nd, 2007, the fee for a criminal record search will be increasing to $30.00 from the current $20.00. The volume of criminal record checks has increased dramatically in recent years. The Winnipeg Police Service processed over 45,000 record checks in 2006, up from approximately 29,000 conducted in 2001.
This $30.00 fee is now being implemented to ensure sufficient revenues to balance processing costs and wait times and is comparable with other jurisdictions.
