Winnipeg Police Service Media Release

Flight From Police

On August 30th, 2006, shortly after 9:30 a.m. members of the Winnipeg Police Service observed a stolen Ford Explorer being operated in the area of Sargent Avenue and Berry Street . Officers attempted to follow this vehicle and in the area of Portage Avenue and Ferry Road attempted to stop it. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop and a very short pursuit ensued which was aborted.

This vehicle was again observed by officers traveling East on Portage Avenue. Officers attempted to deploy a tire deflation device which the driver was able to avoid by driving in an erratic manner.

The driver of the stolen vehicle proceeded to the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Maryland Street where he collided with a van causing minor injury to the occupants. The driver continued South on Maryland Street where he collided with a pedestrian and a tree at the intersection of Maryland Street and Sara Avenue. The driver then fled on foot and was apprehended by officers. The 71 year old pedestrian was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Dustin Hatcher, 22 years of age, of Winnipeg has been charged with Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Bodily Harm X 3, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, Flight from Police Officer, Drive Disqualified and Fail to Remain at the Scene of an Accident.

 

Robbery

On August 30th, shortly after 4:30 p.m. a 79 year old female was walking in the area of the Grant Park Shopping Centre at 1120 Grant Avenue when two males operating a green four door car approached her from behind. The passenger got out of the vehicle, grabbed her purse from her shoulder and fled the area. The victim received minor injuries.

The suspect vehicle is identified as a dark green, four-door Honda Civic or Volkswagen Jetta. Both suspects are described as having dark hair and twenty years of age. The passenger of the vehicle is described as Caucasian, medium build, average height, wearing a red t-shirt and blue jeans.

 

Public's Assistance Required

The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting the public's assistance in locating Ernest Kennett Sr., 69 years of age of Winnipeg. It is believed that Mr. Kennett is in need of medical assistance.

Mr. Kennett is described as 6'0”, 200 pounds, straight grey hair, brown eyes, medium complexion, with glasses and a possible moustache. He requires assistance to walk and may use a cane or a wheelchair.

The Winnipeg Police Service believes that Mr. Kennett is in the company of his son who may not be providing the care required. Mr. Kennett's son, Ernest Kennett Jr. is described as 40 years of age, 5'10”, 161 pounds, long straight brown hair with green eyes.

They are believed to be travelling in a purple, 1994 Ford Ranger, regular cab short box truck, Manitoba licence number EBV 145. They also may have a German Sheppard dog with them.

Anyone who observes Mr Kennett Sr. or Mr. Kennett Jr. or the above noted vehicle is requested to contact the Winnipeg Police Service at 204-986-6222 or your local police service.
