Online reporting - FAQ

The process takes approximately 15 minutes and you will be guided through a series of steps to complete the report.

Basic personal and contact information will be required, as well as particulars such as approximate date, time and location of offence. Details of personal property such as serial numbers and approximate value may also be required.

You will have an opportunity to review and modify your report prior to completion.

Once you have submitted the report, you will be assigned a temporary tracking number and can print an unofficial copy of the report for your records.

All online police reports will be reviewed within 48 hours.

Upon approval, you will receive an email notification with the permanent occurrence number and a PDF copy of the official report.

You may be contacted by a member of the Winnipeg Police Service if further information is required.

In many cases, online reporting is the most effective and efficient way to make a police report.  It allows you to complete the report at your own convenience.  All online reports receive the same investigative follow-up as any report made in person.  All information you submit is secure and protected.  Some incidents have been designated for online reporting only and there is no other option.  For any emergencies, or crimes in progress, call 911.

Reports must be filed by the actual complainant, owner, or authorized representative. An authorized representative is a person authorized by the owner to be in lawful possession of the property (i.e. manager, store clerk, loss prevention officer, caretaker, renter, employee with company vehicle, etc).

An email address is required to provide you with a report status and to send you a free copy of the police report.

A known suspect is a term used to describe when you or someone else knows the person or where to find the person who committed the crime. A suspect description or vehicle license plate is not a known suspect.

If you have a suspect description, this in not a known suspect. Please describe the suspect in the "Incident Narrative" portion of the report.

Items left behind may provide valuable evidence in helping police identify the suspect(s). If any items are discovered that do not belong to you (e.g. tools, documents, clothing) and you are able to physically, safely and legally transport the item(s), please do the following:

  • Complete an online report, ensuring the report includes the location you found the item.
  • Wait for your online report number to be sent to you (e.g. E16001234); and
  • Bring your report number and the located item(s) to any Winnipeg Police Service Centre.

When handling found evidence:

  • Try to handle it as little as possible in an attempt to preserve any possible evidence it may provide.
  • Store it in a paper or plastic bag.
  • Deliver the item to your local police station, if physically, safely and legally able to do so.

If you have surveillance video footage, it may be brought into any Winnipeg Police Service Centre. Please do the following:

  • Complete an online report, ensuring the report includes that surveillance video exists.
  • Wait for your official online report number to be sent to you via email (e.g. E16001234).  (The T# you received is only a temporary report number)
  • Make two (2) digital copies of the surveillance footage. (digital media will not be returned)   
    • Use a water soluble marker and provide the following information on each copy:
      • Report number (e.g. E1800001234)
      • Date and time of offence
      • Type of incident (e.g. Damage to vehicle)
      • Date and time video was copied/burned
      • Initials of the person who made the copies
        • If another person is turning the video over to police, they should initial the copies as well.

If you're a loss prevention officer or an owner of a store or business, the report can be made as directed above. Please bring a copy of your internal store or loss prevention report when drop off your surveillance footage at the Winnipeg Police Service Centre.

Please be aware if the property was taken by force or threat, this is a robbery and cannot be submitted by online reporting. These reports, if just occurred, can be made to 911 or if historic, to the non-emergency line 204-986-6222.

  • Attend any Winnipeg Police Service Centre and turn over the two (2) copies of the surveillance footage along with your report number.

Your report will be reviewed within 48 hours and either approved, rejected or additional follow-up information from you will be requested. You will be advised via email of the status of your report. Do not reply via email to any of these automated messages as these accounts are not monitored. Follow the directions provided on how to respond regarding your report.

Once approved, your report will be transferred into the Winnipeg Police Service's Records Management System. The report will receive the same investigation and statistical analysis ability as if the report had been filed over the telephone or in person.

The reviewing member may request that you provide additional information or corrections before approving your temporary report. The email message that you will receive will have specific instructions permitting you to log into your original report for amendment.

If we have not received this requested information from you within 30 days, your temporary report will automatically be deleted from the system.

To avoid having duplicate outstanding reports on the same incident, you are asked not to send in more information until such a time as your initial report has been reviewed and/or approved.

You may print an unofficial copy of the report at the time you submit it. This report will have a temporary tracking number and cannot be used for insurance purposes. It is for your records only. Your report will be reviewed within 48 hours. Once approved, you will receive a copy of your official report with a permanent occurrence number. This number will have 10 digits beginning with the letter "E", (eg. E1800001234). This report may be used for insurance purposes.
