Ronald McDonald House is a home away from home for families of sick children and located two blocks from Children’s Hospital at Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg. It offers 14 bedrooms, games room, play area, bathrooms, large kitchen, all spread over three stories and 11,000 square feet.
Also, Ronald McDonald Family Room extends the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities to within the walls of the Health Sciences Centre’s Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg.
This space within the hospital is a place of respite and comfort for families with children who area patients at HSC Children’s Hospital and need to take a break from the hospital environment.
How the K9 Unit Chose Ronald McDonald House
Ronald McDonald House has a very special place in the hearts of the members of the K9 Unit. One of their own members Cst. Spruyt and his family have first-hand experience with this amazing service.
"In April our youngest son, Henry, was diagnosed with bronchiolitis. Being a preemie and only 6 weeks old at the time it quickly became a very serious infection. The day after he was diagnosed, my wife woke early in the morning to find our son basically unresponsive and turning blue. Immediately upon our arrival at Children's Hospital Emergency, the medical staff recognized how serious the situation was and attended to him, starting chest compressions and reviving him. Ultimately the infection was so severe that his body was starting to shut down and he was unable to breathe on his own. He was placed on a ventilator and admitted to pediatric ICU where he stayed for the next week. We were lucky that everything turned out fine, however, the staff kept telling us that we found him at the right time. Had my wife not woken up and checked on Henry he likely would not have made it through the night.
We would like to thank the Children's Hospital Emergency staff as well as the PICU staff for their hard work, dedication and professionalism.
When Henry was admitted to PICU we were also fortunate enough to learn about Ronald McDonald House. It truly is a wonderful organization that provides a haven for families while their children are sick and staying at Children's Hospital. The staff and volunteers go above and beyond to provide a welcoming and comforting environment.
On behalf of the Spruyt family we feel very fortunate and honoured that the Winnipeg Police K9 unit has chosen to support the Ronald McDonald House so they may continue to provide help to families in need."
