WPS K9 Teams join peers from Canada and United States for Some Timely Training

On September 13, 2013 the Little Falls Police Department invited 33 canine handlers and trainers who are all members of the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) to attend a Canine Scenario Based Training event.

Handlers from all parts of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Canada took part in the training, coordinated through USPCA Region 12. Two WPS teams, as well as a team from Morden, took part in the training.

The training event was an advanced course for canine handlers. Participants learned best practices for responding to some of the very real scenarios these members encounter on the street.

This training covered:

  • building searches,
  • area searches,
  • tracking,
  • narcotics training inside vehicles and buildings,
  • ground fighting survival enhancement,
  • live maneuver drills with gunfire, incorporating Critical Incident Response Teams with canine handlers in high stress environments.

At the end of the event the teams put together a fun little video to showcase some of their dogs:
