Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

I have had difficulty passing the Winnipeg Police Service Physical Abilities Test (WPS PAT). Can you provide any tips on how I can improve my fitness level in order to pass the test?

The WPS PAT is designed to mimic a critical incident, which may require running after a suspect, taking control of the suspect (physically, if necessary) and resolving the incident. The WPS PAT consists of a number of stations that need to be completed in a circuit fashion. Completing the WPS PAT within the defined standard demonstrates that you have the minimum physical abilities to become a Winnipeg Police Service constable.

• Currently, the University of Manitoba is conducting the WPS PAT testing. Visit the University’s Web site for more information.

I have heard that the training at the Academy is very difficult, and I have children. Is it possible to be successful in managing the workload as well as my responsibilities at home?

The training is intensive and time consuming. You are required to maintain at least at 65% average to be successful at the Academy. With organization, time management and the support of your family and friends, this is not an impossible task. There are many women with children who have successfully completed training at the Academy.

After graduation from the Academy, do I have a choice as to where I will be posted?

After graduation, you are placed in a division that best suits the needs of the service. However, different circumstances may be considered when placing new recruits in a division, such as special skills, location of residence, etc.

Will I be required to work shifts?

All general patrol officers are required to work shifts. These shifts are generally:

• Day shift: 0700 – 1700
• Evening shift: 1630 – 0230
• Midnight shift: 2130 – 0730

This is a 10 hour day, compressed work week. This schedule allows for a series of days off after each series of working days.

How would it affect my career if I wanted to start a family?

A large number of the women at the Winnipeg Police Service have chosen to start families. There are a number of different options available to you for maternity and parental leaves.

I am older, have grown children, and am looking to re-enter the workforce. Is this realistic?

We encourage everyone interested in a policing career to enter the application process. You must meet all the required standards, regardless of your age. If you meet these standards, re-entry to the workforce as a Winnipeg Police Service constable is realistic.
