Winnipeg, MB – Make theft prevention a part of your spring tune-up by registering your bicycle for free with 529 Garage.

“This free registration service is not just about recovery — it's about prevention,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “I’m proud to have championed this change, and I encourage every cyclist in Winnipeg to register their bike with 529 Garage. It's quick, it's easy, and it connects you to a global network dedicated to bike security.”

“Biking is one of the best ways to get around our city, whether you’re commuting or simply enjoying our beautiful parks and active transportation paths,” said Evan Duncan, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Community Services. “Registering for free with 529 Garage is one of the best things you can do to protect your bike against theft.”

Bike data registered with 529 Garage is accessible by jurisdictions across the world, including the City of Winnipeg. The City will access users’ contact information from 529 Garage when attempting to return recovered bikes.

“The Winnipeg Police Service is pleased to support this initiative to return stolen bikes to their owners,” said Inspector Kevin Riel, commander of the WPS Community Relations Division. “This registry will be an additional tool to continue our enforcement efforts in this regard. In addition, our officers will continue to focus on crime prevention strategies to help bike owners prevent theft in the first place.”

If your registered bike has been stolen, set an alert on 529 Garage and report it to Police by either:

You can also purchase an optional shield sticker directly from 529 Garage to let potential thieves know your bike is registered.

“The shift to 529 Garage as Winnipeg’s bicycle registration system makes it easier than ever to register a bike,” said Mark Cohoe, Executive Director, Bike Winnipeg. “Just as important, the bicycle registry is now linked globally, meaning registry information is available worldwide. Best of all, people purchasing bikes online have a way to check the serial number of a bike against the registry of stolen bikes.”

“529 Garage is another piece in a comprehensive approach to enhancing cycling in Winnipeg, along with establishing safe cycling routes, timely road maintenance, good bike parking, and community awareness,” said Lucas Stewart, Executive Director, The WRENCH. “Anything that makes it easier for Winnipeggers to more often choose biking for getting around is a good thing. This is an important step for Winnipeg to become the great cycling city we know it can be.”

As of May 1, 2024, the City will no longer accept new registrations for the existing bike registry. If your bike is already registered with the City, we will keep your information on file until May 1, 2026 and will have access to it if we recover your bike before that date.

You can contact 311 to update your information in the City’s registry until May 1, 2026.
