Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Alexander Avenue and Elgin Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two structure fires on the morning of Thursday, April 25, 2024.

Alexander Avenue fire
At 9:12 a.m., WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, two-storey house in the 1200 block of Alexander Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene, they found heavy smoke coming from the house. A defensive fire attack was launched. Once conditions improved, firefighters were able to enter the structure to complete extinguishment of the fire. The fire was declared under control at 9:55 a.m.

Crews completed a search of the structure and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

The house was previously damaged by a fire on October 6, 2023.

Emergency demolition is being arranged as its structural integrity is compromised due to severe fire and water damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Elgin Avenue fire
At 9:36 a.m., the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a structure in the 1900 block of Elgin Avenue.

Upon arrival to the scene, crews found a large garage fully engulfed in flames, with the fire threatening adjacent structures. Crews quickly worked protect the other buildings and extinguish the fire. The fire was declared under control at 10:06 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

As the building is at risk of collapse, emergency demolition is being arranged.

The fire remains under investigation.
