On April 18, 2024, at approximately 12:10 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the first block of Jorowski Cove for the report of a male who had been stabbed.

East District General Patrol officers attended and located a 21-year-old male victim suffering from upper body injuries sustained from being stabbed. Officers provided the victim with emergency medical care with the application of chest seals. The victim was transported to hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to stable. The adult male suspect fled on foot before police arrived.

The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation and learned the suspect and the victim, who were previously known to one another, were together in a residence in the block mentioned above, when a verbal argument ensued. The argument escalated when the suspect produced a machete and struck the victim multiple times, causing serious injuries.

At approximately 12:50 p.m., officers arrested the suspect at his residence without incident and recovered a machete which they seized as evidence.

Phoenix Kalen KAWAKAMI, 19, of Winnipeg, is charged with Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Weapon, Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order, and Breach of Recognizance.

He was detained in custody.
