On December 28, 2023, at approximately 1:45 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to 25 Furby Street for an adult female being held hostage by an armed male in the apartment block.
He barricaded them inside a suite, and it was quickly established that two other adults and a child were also being held against their will inside.
Eventually the other adult (a female) and child were released from the suite, and a male escaped. These victims were all taken into the care of the Tactical Support Team, unharmed. The initial female victim remained inside the suite with the armed male.
Communication and negotiations were established by the Tactical Support Team and Crisis Negotiation Unit. The victim’s life was in imminent danger as the armed male would not allow her to leave.
At approximately 5:10 p.m., the Tactical Support Team implemented a rescue plan, intent on safely removing the female. During the rescue, member’s firearms were discharged, the male was struck and he succumbed to his injuries. The victim was not injured.
Investigators believe the deceased male was a person of interest regarding another homicide being investigated at this address.
