Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Stradbrook Avenue, Higgins Avenue, and Bourkewood Place

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to several fires on the evening of Monday, December 11, 2023.

Stradbrook Avenue ecampment fire
At 9:24 p.m., WFPS crews responded to reports of an outdoor fire near a riverbank along Stradbrook Avenue.

When crews arrived to the scene, they found a fire involving an unattended temporary encampment, with flames spreading to nearby trees. The fire was quickly extinguished.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Higgins Avenue fire
At 10:39 p.m., WFPS firefighters responded to reports of a fire involving a vacant industrial building in the 0-100 block of Higgins Avenue.

When they arrived to the scene, crews found smoke and flames coming from the building. They fought the fire, quickly declaring it under control at 11:04 p.m.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The building has sustained damages in several previous fires.

Damage estimates are not available.

Bourkewood Place fire
At 10:42 p.m., the WFPS responded to reports of smoke in a one-and-a-half storey home in the 0-100 block of Bourkewood Place.

Upon arrival on scene, crews investigated and found a fire in the ceiling of the home. They fought the fire from inside, declaring the fire under control at 11:06 p.m.

The occupant of the house safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported.

Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by a malfunctioning bathroom exhaust fan.
