Winnipeg, MB – Due to recent environmental conditions, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) is lifting the temporary open-air fire ban for the city of Winnipeg. In addition, WFPS will resume issuing fireworks display permits and open fire permits. The WFPS will continue to enforce all permit conditions.
The WFPS would like to remind residents of the regulations regarding outdoor fire receptacles such as fire pits, fire places, and outdoor BBQs. Note that all open fires, including permitted burns and recreational fires within approved outdoor receptacles on public or private property are not permitted when wind speed exceeds 25 km/h.
“Even with the recent rainfall, prudent fire safety measures should always be followed when enjoying a recreational fire,” said John Lane, Chief of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. “Residents should have a water supply at the ready and only use by-law approved fire pits to reduce the potential spread of airborne embers which increase the risk of brush and grass fires.”
From January 1 to May 16, 2018, WFPS responded to 79 grass/brush fires. In 2017, WFPS responded to a total of 85 grass/brush fires for the year.
