Winnipeg, MB – A completely signalized intersection has been installed and activated at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Sinclair Street. The new traffic signals will accommodate four directions of vehicular traffic and four pedestrian crossings. Included in the project are audible pedestrian signals, countdown timers, a cellular modem for real-time connection to the City’s Transportation Management Center, and tactile yellow pads at each crossing. The cost for the project is approximately $205,000.
“The new traffic signals are good news for Old Kildonan, and will make it safer for everyone to navigate through this busy intersection. I’m especially pleased that safety will be enhanced for the two adjacent schools on Jefferson Avenue”, says Devi Sharma, Councillor for Old Kildonan Ward. “Traffic will flow more smoothly now that the signals have been activated and will reduce traffic congestion experienced by many in the area.”
"Garden City Collegiate is one of the biggest high schools in Winnipeg and our 1,500 plus students will be safer with these new lights," says Brian O’Leary, Superintendent of Seven Oaks School Division. "Traffic in the area will move more efficiently. These new lights are a real benefit."
This traffic signals installation was prompted by an earlier traffic analysis conducted by the Public Works Department in the fall of 2016 which concluded that the stop signs at this intersection should be replaced with traffic signals to better accommodate the large number of people walking, cycling, and driving through the intersection. This project was approved on January 10, 2017 by the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works.
