Winnipeg, MB - At an event this morning, Councillor Brian Mayes officially opened two newly-reconstructed tennis courts and kicked off a free beginner tennis clinic with one of Manitoba’s top tennis players, Kevin Kylar.

“The revamped tennis courts offer another way to get active at City parks for free,” said Brian Mayes, City Councillor for St. Vital. “Whether you’ve been playing tennis for years or are trying it out for the first time, these brand new courts are the perfect way to enjoy the sport.”

The two tennis courts, located at St. Germain Park, 125 Winslow Drive, have been reconstructed to provide recreation opportunities to residents. Work completed on the site included removing the old tennis courts and base, installing a new base and new asphalt, installing new acrylic surfacing on the courts, putting in new posts and tennis nets, and installing new fencing and benches.

“Tennis Manitoba is very excited to see another new, outdoor tennis facility open for public use at St. Germain Park in St. Vital,” said Mark Arndt, Executive Director of Tennis Manitoba. “Congratulations to Councillor Brian Mayes on this successful project which will provide residents in the area the opportunity to play our great sport at a beautiful site.”

There are a total of 135 tennis courts in the city of Winnipeg, with 28 having been renovated since 2013. The new tennis courts at St. Germain Park join other newly-renovated tennis courts in the St. Vital area, including courts at Centre scolaire Léo-Rémillard and Windsor Community Centre.

Construction on the St. Germain Park tennis courts began in May 2017 and was funded by the City of Winnipeg’s Parks and Recreation Enhancement Program (PREP) for a total of $170,000. For more information on City tennis courts, please see City of Winnipeg – Tennis Courts.
