Winnipeg, MB - Starting on Monday, July 24, 2017, the City will begin testing back-in, angled parking stalls on the south side of Bannatyne Avenue between Rorie Street and Waterfront Drive to increase on-street parking spaces in the Exchange District.
By changing the existing parallel parking stalls to back-in, angled parking, 10 additional parking stalls will be added to this section of Bannatyne. In order to accommodate the new parking configuration, this section of Bannatyne Avenue will become a one-way street in the westbound direction for the duration of the eight-month pilot project.
“Increasing parking capacity in this vibrant, thriving community is an important priority for me and my Council colleagues,” said Mike Pagtakhan, City Councillor for Point Douglas. “I’m pleased to see this innovative pilot project get up and running so we can provide additional parking spaces for everyone wanting to take advantage of all the Exchange District has to offer.”
Feedback will be gathered from stakeholders and the public including local area businesses, street parking users, and those traveling through the area through an online survey, to determine the effectiveness of the change and the feasibility of implementing angled parking elsewhere in the Exchange District or Downtown.
“Back-in, angled parking will be new for most of us but I think it may be the solution we need in this area,” said Councillor Marty Morantz, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works. “We are looking for Winnipeggers’ feedback so please try it out and let us know what you think.”
The pilot project is part of a City Council directive to explore innovative on-street parking solutions for the Exchange District with the aim of increasing the available number of on-street parking spots. The costs associated with the pilot project are minimal.
It is anticipated the Public Service will provide an interim update back to the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works in the fall regarding the interim findings of the project.
