Inaugural civil marriage ceremony takes place at City Hall

Winnipeg, MB - Lisa and Chris, winners of the City of Winnipeg’s first civil marriage ceremony contest, will become the first couple to exchange vows at City Hall this afternoon.

Lisa and Chris met in 2002 at Transcona Collegiate Institute and connected over a shared love of music and video games. They share two beautiful children, a home and a cat.

In March of 2016 Lisa was diagnosed with breast cancer, and underwent surgery and chemotherapy through the summer. “The worst time of our lives was made just a little better because we were together-we have learned that life is short so we need to make certain things, like our marriage, a priority,” said Lisa. “It is so special to accomplish that goal as the first couple to get married at City Hall!”

On March 22, 2016, City Council voted to adopt the 2016 Capital and Operating Budgets. Conducting civil marriage ceremonies at City Hall for a fee of $500 was part of the adopted budget.

"We have the pleasure of working in a uniquely beautiful building, and I'm pleased couples now get the opportunity to share one of life's most special moments here," said Mayor Brian Bowman. "In a place that is used to seeing its share of vigorous debate, it's great to also see some love here at City Hall!"
