Millennium Library hosts Bookfest: a celebration of reading and books

Winnipeg, MB - Millennium Library will host the first annual BookFest on November 19, an event to showcase the best in prairie publishing that will feature a book expo, "book tastings" and a panel talk.

Where: Millennium Library, 251 Donald Street, second floor
When: Saturday, November 19, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Events are as follows:

  • Book Tastings - 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
    • Four 30-minute seatings of delicious “must read” titles of the latest in prairie fiction and non-fiction; a fun, quick-fire appetizer pairing librarians and avid readers presenting the best in publishing.
      • 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Life and Death: notable new memoirs & mysteries
      • Noon to 12:30 p.m. Past and Present: compelling local history & military must-reads
      • 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Fact and Fiction: hot (and hidden) gems in non-fiction and fiction
      • 3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Turtle Island Reads: new and classic Indigenous titles
  • How to Judge a Book by Its Cover - 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
    • What kind of cover makes us reach for a particular book? How does a publisher choose which cover to use? And why do so many book covers feature headless people, anyway? Charlene Diehl of the Winnipeg International Writers Festival moderates a discussion featuring cover designers from Doowah Design and Mel Matheson; Library Collections Librarian Barbara Bourrier-Lacroix; and Jamis Paulson of Turnstone Press.
  • Book Expo - 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
    • Explore the best of prairie fiction and non-fiction with local publishers and authors. Prize draws every hour.
  • Colour & Create - 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
    • Anishinaabe artist Jackie Traverse showcases her new Indigenous colouring book, Sacred Feminine.
  • Book Club Corner - 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
    • A showcase of titles your book club will love. Enter to win a set of 10 copies of The Opening Sky plus an appearance by its author Joan Thomas at your book club.

Displays of recommended reads on various themes will be on display, including a selection of titles personally curated by our Writers-in-Residence, Christine Fellows and John K. Samson.

All events are free.
