Winnipeg, MB - A portion of Bonnycastle Park on Assiniboine Avenue has been selected as the site for Winnipeg’s Downtown off-leash dog park.
“The selection of Bonnycastle Park brings us one step closer to the fulfillment of my commitment to open a fenced in, off-leash dog park in Downtown Winnipeg,” Mayor Brian Bowman said. “It’s exciting to see the amenities in Downtown Winnipeg beginning to take shape and resemble other areas of Winnipeg. This is a major step towards that goal and the continued revitalization of our Downtown.”
The new 0.15 hectare park will feature a perimeter fence along with an internal fence to separate small dogs from larger dogs. Other features include dog “furniture”/agility elements, lights, signage, park furniture for people, and waste receptacles. A granular path along the interior of the fence and tree and shrub planting around the edge of the new off-leash enclosure will complete the design. Seven sites within Downtown Winnipeg were considered for the dog park. Based on public feedback and operational requirements, this portion of Bonnycastle Park was selected as the optimal location within a City greenspace. The parcel chosen is within a 5 - 10 minute walk of the Broadway-Assiniboine neighbourhood, is adjacent to the Assiniboine Riverwalk and Bonnycastle Park for on-leash dog walking, and the area is not prone to river flooding.
Once a contractor has been selected, construction of the new dog park is expected to begin around the end of September/beginning of October and will continue for three to four weeks.
