Winnipeg, MB - Grade twelve students across Winnipeg are encouraged to apply for the new Mayor's Scholarship for Community Leadership award Mayor Brian Bowman announced today.

“I am very excited to recognize high school students who have demonstrated a commitment to improving and strengthening our community,” said Mayor Bowman. “It is important to acknowledge, reward, and support the important work young people do for our community especially as they grow into our future leaders.”

The Mayor’s Scholarship for Community Leadership will award five (5), $1,000 scholarships to recognize students who have demonstrated consistent and outstanding dedication to solving a community problem or making their community a better place to live. The Mayor’s Scholarship rewards the achievements of Winnipeg’s future leaders and supports them on the path towards their educational and career goals.

Community leadership can be demonstrated through activities that promote racial and social inclusion, drive reconciliation, encourage environmental stewardship, and support or empower Winnipeg’s less fortunate.

The Winnipeg Foundation is managing the fund for the Mayor’s Scholarship including issuing the scholarship cheques and tax receipts, as required. The Mayor’s office will manage application intake and award recipients will be selected by an independent selection panel.

Scholarship applicants must complete and submit an application form, found on the Mayor’s website. Only application forms completed in full will be considered.

Applications must be received by May 20, 2016.
