Winnipeg, MB - Winnipeg Public Library will celebrate Take Your Child to the Library Day on Saturday, February 6, 2016.

“At Winnipeg Public Library, we are here to help strengthen the early literacy skills of the children in our communities,” said Rick Walker, Manager of Library Services. “We encourage you to bring your children to any Winnipeg Public Library branch to check out all of the fun activities we have planned.”

Take Your Child to the Library Day activities include:

  • Craft and story stations,
  • Literacy-based games,
  • Puppet shows, and
  • Family concerts.

The full schedule of activities for each location is available online at winnipeg.ca/library or by contacting your local branch. All events are free.

To commemorate Take Your Child to the Library Day, a new Library card will also be launched that promotes talk, sing, read, write and play, the foundational activities to develop early literacy. New library members will be able to choose the early literacy-themed card to start borrowing and accessing the Library’s extensive online eLibrary right away. Existing members can swap their current card for the new design at no cost on February 6.

Take Your Child to the Library Day is an annual international event dedicated to encouraging families to visit their local libraries. Generous support for this event was provided by the Literacy for Life Fund held at The Winnipeg Foundation, and the Winnipeg Public Library Board's Literacy Fund.
