Released: January 18, 2016 at 2:30 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB - On January 18, also known as "Blue Monday," Winnipeg Public Library in partnership with the Mood Disorder Society of Manitoba announced the installation of new light therapy lamps in libraries to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

“I am pleased to see our libraries taking a step towards providing a healthier environment for our citizens,” said Scott Gillingham, City Councillor for St. James - Brooklands - Weston. “With the installation of these lamps, St. James-Assiniboia and Millennium Libraries will help many people in Winnipeg who struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder.”

SAD is a form of depression with symptoms that can range from a lack of motivation to, in extreme cases, suicidal ideation. Light therapy, in addition to other therapies, has been shown to help people with SAD.

“Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba is pleased to partner with the City of Winnipeg on this initiative which brings increased access to light therapy for the more than 15,000 Winnipeggers who experience SAD,” said Tara Brousseau Snider, Executive Director, Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba. “It may have a positive health impact on reducing depression and winter time sadness.”

These full-spectrum lamps will be available in designated areas of Millennium Library (251 Donald Street) and St. James-Assiniboia Library (1910 Portage Avenue) during open hours. For more information on Winnipeg Public Library, including hours and locations, please see winnipeg.ca/library.
