Winnipeg, MB - Some much needed traffic congestion relief is coming to the Polo Park area. Today Municipal Government Minister Drew Caldwell and Mayor Brian Bowman announced the completion of the Polo Park Area Infrastructure Improvements Project.
The aim of this $45.3 million major road works project was to improve traffic flow, ease congestion and delays at intersections and encourage active transportation in the Polo Park area. The Province of Manitoba and City of Winnipeg contributed $20 million each and $5.3 million was funded through the stadium site developer agreement.
“This is a busy section of the city for people going to and from work and for those shopping at the many businesses in the Polo Park area,” said Minister Caldwell. “Improvements in traffic flow in this area will make traveling through this part of the city for work, shopping, and entertainment much more enjoyable.”
“Winnipeggers feel the impact of aging infrastructure every day,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “I am pleased that with this investment we were able to address some of the infrastructure needs in the Polo Park area.”
The major components of this project included:
- extending and widening St. Matthews Avenue from Route 90 to St. James Street;
- widening St. Matthews Avenue from St. James Street to Empress Street;
- widening St. James Street from Maroons Road to Ellice Avenue; and
- intersection improvements at Ellice Avenue/St. James Street and St. Matthews Avenue/St. James Street.
New sidewalks, improvements to existing land drainage, water main renewals, connections to existing and future active transportation corridors, improved aesthetics, and relocation and protection of other utilities were also completed as part of this project.
