Winnipeg, MB - City officials today met with Mr. Kyriakos Vogiatzakis, owner of the M.S. River Rouge, to discuss the recent closure of the Alexander Dock. The docks were closed following the recent completion of a lengthy engineering inspection which determined the structure was not safe for public use.
âÅI was pleased to be able to meet with Mr. Vogiatzakis today to discuss ways in which the City may be able to assist him in securing a new dock location for the River Rouge,â said Michael Jack, Acting Chief Operating Officer. âÅWe recognize that the River Rouge and river boat tourism industry has a long history in Winnipeg and it is important that we do what we can to help the tradition continue.â
Jack added that due to the size of the River Rouge, there are very few suitable docking locations, both publicly and privately run, that can accommodate the boat in addition to providing the necessary parking to accommodate patrons.
The Public Service will continue to meet with Mr. Vogiatzakis to address lease agreement matters such as property tax arrears and outstanding lease payments associated with the River Rouge's docking time from 2012 to 2014.
