Winnipeg, MB - In a ceremony today at City Hall, Chandler the cat was awarded the honour of being Winnipeg's #1 cat. Chandler, a one and half year old Russian Blue type kitty, was entered in to the contest by his owners, sisters Amy and Amanda Palmquist. In addition to a commemorative plaque, Chandler will receive the #1 cat licence tag which he will be able to show off to all his cat friends. Chandler's licence fees will also be covered for his lifetime.
One of the criteria for winning the #1 Cat honour was a commitment to responsible pet ownership and his owners say Chandler is supportive of cat licensing because he has some bad habits that put him at risk.
âÅChandler is a true fan of responsible pet ownership because he wants to feel safe. He knows that we love him more than anything but he is a sneaky fellow,â said Amy. âÅHe likes to play a game with us called 'try to sneak out of the house door without the humans knowing.' It's rare that he actually wins at that game, but we bought him a licence so if he were to ever get out and wander away from home, he will be returned back home safe and sound.â
Leland Gordon, Chief Operating Officer for the City's Animal Services Agency was on hand to present Chandler with his award and says the frisky feline makes a great ambassador for Winnipeg's cat community.
âÅI think Chandler was a terrific pick to be Winnipeg's #1 cat,â said Gordon. âÅHe's fully committed to responsible pet ownership by being both neutered and licenced, as well as being a very loving companion to his human family.â
Sixty cats were entered into the City's first-ever #1 Cat Contest, which ran from February 27 to March 27, 2015. Photos of the excellent entries are available here.
The annual licence fee for spayed or neutered cats is $15 and $50 for intact cats. Licences are available for purchase online at City of Winnipeg - Animal Licensing, in-person at the Animal Services Agency (1057 Logan Avenue), or at select retail outlets and veterinary clinics.
