Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and Winnipeg Police Service remind residents to exercise caution around bodies of water

Released: March 11, 2015 at 3:15 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB - With temperatures rising and ice and snow melting, citizens are advised that conditions are becoming exceptionally hazardous on all Winnipeg waterways, including the floodway, drainage ditches and culverts, streams, creeks, retention ponds, and rivers.

Parents and teachers are urged to warn children of the dangers of playing in or near waterways. The ice surfaces are thin and fragile, and falling into ice-cold water can be deadly.

For information on thin ice safety, please visit Winnipeg Police Service - River Patrol or contact the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service’s Public Education Branch at 204-986-2096.
