Winnipeg, MB - The courtyard at City Hall will be bathed in purple light this evening to mark the first ever Pancreatic Cancer Day to support awareness and education for a terrible disease which is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in Canada.

Winnipeg City Hall will join municipal buildings across the nation that will be bathed in purple to raise awareness of the ‘silent killer’ that more than an estimated 4,700 Canadians will be diagnosed with this year.

“Pancreatic Cancer is a horrible disease with the highest mortality rate of all Cancers and tonight I am pleased Winnipeg will show support and raise awareness on the launch of the world’s first Pancreatic Cancer Day,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “It is my hope that, by joining the nation in support and awareness, we help draw attention to symptoms and can make a difference in even one life against this form of cancer that is known to be so difficult to detect and treat

Other notable 2014 landmarks that will be lighting up purple include the CN Tower, Calgary’s Olympic Plaza, Niagara Falls, Airdrie, Toronto, Halifax and Fredericton’s City Halls. Individuals are also encouraged to string purple lights at their homes in November to demonstrate support and awareness.
