Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg is proud to provide positive opportunities for Aboriginal youth to support their futures through Oshki Annishinabe Nigaaniwak (OAN, the City of Winnipeg’s Aboriginal Youth Strategy). OAN post-secondary scholarships are one of the ways that the City is committed to helping Aboriginal youth realize their potential.
This year, Oshki Annishinabe Nigaaniwak awarded five scholarships to Aboriginal youth, who are all attending the University of Manitoba and studying in a variety of fields, including the social sciences, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, economics, and human nutritional sciences.
These five scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded this year to Aboriginal post-secondary students who are enrolled in a full-time program in Winnipeg. These scholarships are awarded to assist with tuition costs. Scholarships are given to individuals who demonstrate academic excellent and community leadership.

In 2008, City Council adopted Oshki Annishinabe Nigaaniwak, the City of Winnipeg's Aboriginal Youth Strategy. It is an innovative strategy with a mission to provide Aboriginal youth positive opportunities in the community and civic system by providing culturally-appropriate programs and supports related to employment, literacy and recreation to increase resiliency, self-sustainability, pride and future opportunities.
Oshki Annishinabe Nigaaniwak (pronounced Awsh-kay Anish-a-nob-bay nee-ga-nee-walk) is the spirit name given to the Aboriginal Youth Strategy by Elders in the community. It means “Young Aboriginal People Leading” and pays tribute to Aboriginal youth as leaders of today as well as tomorrow.
