Winnipeg, MB - The annual TD Summer Reading Club starts Monday, June 23 at all branches of the Winnipeg Public Library and continues until Friday, August 15. Children 12 and under can join the Club and choose a book to read for the fun of it, while improving reading skills and reducing summer learning loss through this national literacy initiative.
Children and their families are invited to drop in to any Winnipeg Public Library branch and sign up for this year's Club. There are a number of free programs being offered as part of the Club, including a special addition this year called StoryMobs, which is offered in both French and English.
What is the TD Summer Reading Club?
The TD Summer Reading Club is a national literacy initiative for children up to age 12. It helps children use the summer months to work on their reading skills, while combating summer learning loss in a fun environment.
How it works:
Participants can sign up at any branch of the Winnipeg Public Library for a free reading kit that comes with an activity booklet, stickers, and a log book. Children track the days they read and collect ballots for prize draws as they progress through their reading logs. Pre-readers participate by tracking days they are read to. Various supplementary programs further engage families in active play and reading throughout the summer.
Programs for children, teens and families:
This year's TD Summer Reading Club theme is Eureka!, which has inspired a wide range of creative and engaging programs for children, teens and families. Over 150 free programs are offered, including:
- Over 75 story time, gaming, and crafting programs for children and families.
- Special performances for families by Seanster and the Monsters, magician Ryan Price, and an interactive storytelling performance by the Aboriginal School of Dance.
- Readings with the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Tuesday, August 12 at nine Winnipeg Public Library branches.

Drop in and meet Goldie and several members of the Goldeyes, and stay for baseball stories, trivia, and crafts.

2:00 p.m. - Millennium Library, 251 Donald StreetBring the whole family to a StoryMob at Millennium Library (in English) or St. Boniface Library (in French), two of thirteen StoryMobs taking place on the same day across Canada. A StoryMob is a literary phenomenon in which great children’s books meet flash mobs. The chosen book for this StoryMob is The Busy Beaver by Canadian author and illustrator Nicholas Oldland. Children and their families can dress up as characters from the book, use props in the telling of the story, and read along as the story is shared. Supplies are provided to create the costumes and props, or you can bring your own. No registration necessary; just drop in to this free event at the Millennium Library or St. Boniface Library.
