City of Winnipeg to execute controlled burns in tall grass prairie areas

Released: May 23, 2014 at 12:39 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg's Public Works Department will be conducting controlled burns at various areas throughout the city until Friday, July 4, 2014. These burns will take place at a number of tall grass prairie remnant and restoration areas in Winnipeg.

Fire is important to the preservation and restoration of our prairies. A lack of fire allows weeds to encroach on endangered plant communities, which is why the City conducts these controlled burns.

These controlled burns will be conducted with appropriate fire guards in place under minimal wind conditions. Controlled burns have been safely conducted by the Naturalist Services Branch on Winnipeg’s tall grass prairies since 1986.
