Mayor Presents Medallions and Royal Canadian Mint Unveils Lucky Loonie

Winnipeg, MB - The Jennifer Jones Olympic gold medal winning team is at City Hall to witness the Royal Canadian Mint present a Lucky Loonie to the City of Winnipeg and receive Outstanding Achievement Award Medallions from Mayor Sam Katz.

“Team Jones was outstanding at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. They impressed the entire nation and made Olympic history by remaining undefeated throughout the Games,” said Mayor Katz. “We are all proud of Team Jones for bringing home the gold and for how well they represented us - as athletes and as ambassadors for the city.”

The Royal Canadian Mint is presenting the City of Winnipeg with a 2014 Lucky Loonie to highlight Winnipeg’s commitment to its athletes. This special keepsake will be on display for the public to see in the Mayor’s Foyer and will serve as a reminder of the world-class performance delivered by Team Jones during the Games.

“The Jennifer Jones rink made Canadians from coast to coast to coast extremely proud when their spirited quest for gold culminated in their ascent to the top of Women’s Curling podium at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games,” said Ian E. Bennett, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. “As we reflect on their achievement, the Mint is also delighted to congratulate the people of the City of Winnipeg who supported them on their remarkable journey.”

The Lucky Loonie, along with Team Jones photos and memorabilia, will be on display to the public Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the Mayor’s Foyer at City Hall.

City of Winnipeg Outstanding Achievement Award Medallions are presented to Winnipeg athletes who achieve gold at the Olympic Games, and are the highest athletic honour awarded by the city.
