Mayor announces $1 million contribution from Winnipeg service club

Winnipeg, MB - Mayor Sam Katz announced in his annual State of the City Address that the Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg will contribute $1 million towards the renovation of Sherbrook Pool.

“The Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg is always ready to lend a hand in our community,” said Mayor Katz. “Sherbrook Pool means so much to people living in the area and this generous contribution from the Kinsmen will help to ensure the renovation stays on track.”

The Sherbrook Pool was closed due to safety concerns surrounding structural problems. Preliminary estimates state that approximately $2.8 million is required to open the doors again.

The 2014 City of Winnipeg Budget set aside funding of nearly $1.7 million for Sherbrook Pool. The contribution from the Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg will ensure that these most pressing renovations and repairs can be completed. The City of Winnipeg will be establishing a sponsorship agreement with the Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg, in order to formally acknowledge this major contribution with name recognition.

“Our club has 25 members who contribute thousands of volunteer hours to support community initiatives,” said Raj Phangureh, President of the Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg. “We are looking forward to the grand re-opening of the Kinsmen Sherbrook Pool and seeing swimmers of all ages return to this historic building.”

Mayor Katz first met with the Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg in November 2013. At that time, discussions were held about how the Kinsmen could play a role in ensuring the re-opening of Sherbrook Pool.
