Crews prepared to manage snow and potential freezing rain

Winnipeg, MB - City of Winnipeg crews will be out today in anticipation of a weather disturbance coming through the city today. Sanding operations will continue and, depending on temperatures, salting will begin as required on Priority 1 streets.

The current weather forecasts predict snowfall and winds increasing in the City this morning. Based on the most recent forecasts, the City is planning to deliver the following services, in keeping with Council's policy:

Priority 1 streets (regional) - Truck plow operations to commence at 10:00 am this morning. Sanding operations will continue throughout. As the truck plow operations progress and temperatures rise, de-icing chemicals will be applied based on the expected window of opportunity with respect to temperatures where they will be effective. If temperatures fall and the winds rise near the end of the event, as predicted, a combination of truck plowing and grader plowing will be used to address conditions on the network.

Priority 2 streets (bus/collector routes) - Snow hauling operations are ongoing to improve sight lines in school zones, at bus stops, crosswalks and lane/alley intersections. Maintenance sanding will be carried out at priority locations. As the weather system moves through the city, assessments on further snow removal will be determined.

Priority 3 streets (residential) - The City is monitoring residential road network conditions and spreading sand as and where required.

Priority 1 and 2 sidewalks - sidewalk blowing of problem areas and as the weather system moves through the City. Accumulations will be monitored to determine when a P1 and P2 sidewalk plow operation will begin.

Priority 3 sidewalks - Residential sidewalk clearing are ongoing and nearing completion. Priorities have been given to school zones.

Hydrants - Crews have been deployed during daytime operations to clear around hydrants.

Back lanes - Lane/alley clearing is complete and, as the weather system moves through the City, the department will monitor accumulations and assess the lane network for further decisions.

Citizens are urged to use caution in and around these winter equipment operations.

Citizens are reminded that the Annual Snow Route Parking Ban remains in effect daily on streets designated as snow routes from 2:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. until March 1, 2014.

Plowing operations were completed in accordance with the City Council-approved Snow Clearing and Ice Control Policy, which can be found online at City of Winnipeg - Snow Clearing Policy
