Crews removing snow piles, sanding ongoing, completion of residential routes

Winnipeg, MB - Today, Mayor Sam Katz, St. Norbert Councillor and Chair, Standing Policy Committee for Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works Justin Swandel and Public Works Director Brad Sacher provided Winnipeggers with a status report regarding activities surrounding snow clearing in the city over the past few weeks.
“Crews are working full out to complete plowing in all zones of the city,” said Mayor Katz. “At the same time, we are working to clear sidewalks and remove the large piles of snow from around intersections. Extreme cold and snow conditions have made the snow clearing operations especially challenging, and we are asking the public’s patience as we make every effort to complete the work as quickly as possible.”
The weather forecast in the coming days will bring a welcome break from extreme temperatures. This will significantly improve the conditions for completing snow clearing as quickly as possible for the benefit of all citizens.

Snow removal efforts are continuing throughout the city. They include:

Streets:

  • Ongoing work on P1 (regional routes) network nightly to address ridges and remove stockpiles at intersections.
  • Sanding operations on P1 and P2 (bus/collector) network ongoing around the clock.
  • P3 (Residential) plowing cycles as per the Know Your Zone schedule are complete and currently addressing missed locations system wide.

Sidewalks:

  • P1 and P2 sidewalk clearing operations are underway.
  • Due to conditions, sidewalks being cleared with blowers rather than plows.

As more equipment becomes available tonight and in the nights ahead, crews will continue working on the ridges on the P1 and P2 network. Traffic volumes during the day prohibits the work being done at that time.

All missed P3 residential streets are expected to be complete by Saturday morning, January 11, (St Vital Zone J by tomorrow morning).

P1 and P2 grader plow operations are expected to be complete by Monday morning, January 13.

Hauling snow from bridges and overpasses and removing snow banks on P1 routes and in the downtown continues.

Stockpiles at intersections on the P2 network will continue until complete.

P1 and P2 sidewalks expected to be completed by tomorrow morning

P3 (residential) sidewalks should be complete within seven days (which will include work taking place over the weekend).

Citizens are reminded that the Annual Snow Route Parking Ban remains in effect daily on streets designated as snow routes from 2:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. until March 1, 2014.

Plowing operations were completed in accordance with the City Council-approved Snow Clearing and Ice Control Policy, which can be found online at City of Winnipeg - Snow Clearing Policy
