Released: January 6, 2014 at 5:23 p.m.
Motorists urged to park elsewhere when a residential street is scheduled for snow clearing; citizens encouraged to Know Your Zone

Winnipeg, MB - The public is being reminded that plowing of residential streets will continue this evening to improve the overall condition of residential streets. The Residential Parking Ban has been declared and applies to specific snow zones across the city in 12-hour shifts that will continue to 7:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 8.

Citizens are urged to confirm the snow zone letter for their neighbourhood. Motorists planning on parking on residential streets are also urged to know the snow zone letter for the area. The information is available at knowyourzone.winnipeg.ca or by contacting 311.

Public Works has addressed many of the ice ruts on our streets and is continuing that work tonight.

Large accumulations of snow, combined with record low temperatures that are impacting on the capabilities of personnel and equipment in cold-weather work, have led to some delays in the residential snow clearing operation.

Streets that are missed during the clearing of any zone will be revisited by crews as outlined in knowyourzone.winnipeg.ca. Citizens are encouraged to contact 311 via phone, email, 311 app or online self-service to report their street being missed.

The schedule for clearing in affected snow zones is available on the City’s website at knowyourzone.winnipeg.ca. The City’s website also displays this information on a map, while snow clearing is underway. The map highlights those residential streets where the ban applies for the current and next shift.

The public is also encouraged to sign up in advance for email or Twitter notifications through knowyourzone.winnipeg.ca to find out when designated snow zones are scheduled for clearing.

Vehicles parked in violation of the residential parking ban will receive a $150 ticket ($75 if paid early), and may be towed to a nearby street that is not scheduled to be cleared, or that has already been cleared. If you believe your vehicle may have been towed due to the residential parking ban, please contact 311 for assistance in locating it. There will be no warning notifications during the Residential Parking Ban. Tickets will be issued and vehicles may be towed if parked in violation of the ban.

In 2011, City Council approved changes to improve Winnipeg’s winter parking bans to ensure even more timely and effective clearing of snow and ice from city streets. The most significant change is to the Residential Parking Ban which, when declared, will be in place around-the-clock and will apply in 12-hour shifts, day and night, in designated snow zones across the city.

Plowing operations commenced in accordance with the City Council-approved Snow Clearing and Ice Control Policy, which can be found online at City of Winnipeg - Snow Clearing Policy
