Winnipeg, MB - In an ongoing commitment to reduce the City's greenhouse gas emissions, the Public Service will make a recommendation to the Alternate Service Delivery Committee on December 6, 2013 to trial and test Automatic Vehicle Location systems in fleet vehicles.
Under the Winnipeg Fleet Management Agency’s Green Fleet Plan, a new Automatic Vehicle Location system will allow for the collection of data regarding amount of time City fleet vehicles and equipment spend idling. Collected data will then be used to enforce the City’s idle reduction policy which limits the amount of time a City vehicle or piece of equipment can idle. The policy is part of the Green Fleet Plan that outlines a goal to reduce fleet idling by 50 per cent by 2019.
“The City of Winnipeg is committed to reducing our local government’s impact on the environment by setting achievable goals for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and increased sustainability,” said Mayor Katz. “We must act now, using new technologies like the Automatic Vehicle Location system to reduce the amount of fossil fuels needed to deliver City services like road maintenance. As is often the case, more efficient use of natural resources like fuel, also saves taxpayers’ money in the long run.”
It is anticipated that with the idle reduction policy, the City will be able to reduce the City’s 2019 greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 17 per cent from the 1998 levels.
