Winnipeg, MB - “My Winnipeg: A Diorama,” a unique art project created by 160 Winnipeg youth, is now on display in the Mayor’s Foyer at City Hall. Members of Youth Agencies Alliance and youth participants were in attendance this afternoon to introduce the project to Mayor Sam Katz.
“This is a fascinating look at our city through creative, young eyes,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “The youth who collaborated on this project had a wonderful opportunity to stretch their imaginations and build something truly wonderful. I think their hard work is evident and I encourage Winnipeggers to come to City Hall to see this interesting piece of art.”
Youth from across the city worked in groups of 10 over a two week period in July to imagine and build the art piece. The project was coordinated by Youth Agencies Alliance (YAA), a group of 18 different after-school and community service agencies, including Art City, West Broadway Youth Outreach, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Winnipeg.
“The diorama showcases buildings and spaces youth want to change or highlight in their neighbourhoods, with limitless possibilities and unbridled creativity,” said Izzy Goluch, Communications Associate for YAA. “The art workshops leading to its creation challenged and inspired youth to think about their ideal city and the results are very impressive. We're pleased to have the opportunity to display this vibrant art collaboration by Winnipeg's youth at our own City Hall.”
The mixed-media installation also includes an eight minute video of the making of the project, filmed by Just TV. Members of the public are invited to view the diorama in the Mayor’s Foyer until Friday, October 18.
