The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is promoting fire safety and prevention with this year's theme, "Prevent Kitchen Fires."

Fire Prevention Week 2013's kickoff event will take place on Monday, October 7 at 10:00 a.m. at Rockwood School, 350 Rockwood Street. This event is being held in association with the City of Winnipeg, the provincial Office of the Fire Commissioner, and sponsors. A fire truck and crew will be on site.

Other Fire Prevention Week activities include:

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service will team up with Home Depot to promote "Prevent Kitchen Fires" by setting up public information booths at Home Depot locations across Winnipeg.

Friday, October 11

All City of Winnipeg Schools will be asked to participate in a city-wide fire drill at 1:00 p.m. Fire Paramedic crews will be on site at some local schools to observe and participate in the drills.

Saturday, October 12

All Fire Paramedic Stations will participate in an open house from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. As in previous years, we are partnering with McDonald's Restaurants which will sponsor the Honourary Fire Chief for a Day contest and supply refreshments.

"Prevent Kitchen Fires" packages will be distributed to all kindergarten to grade three classes in Winnipeg during Fire Prevention Week. Ballots to win one of four Nintendo DS systems are included in the package and children are encouraged to fill them out and bring them to any Fire Paramedic Station open house on October 12.
