Construction underway to improve basement flood protection in the St. James area

Released: August 12, 2013 at 1:41 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB - Construction gets underway this week to install new land drainage sewers to help protect businesses and homes in this area from basement flooding. The new sewers will also help protect the water quality of our rivers and Lake Winnipeg by reducing the frequency of combined sewer overflows.

This work will take about five to six months and will include installing sewers on:

  • Ness Avenue - between Berry Street and Madison Avenue
  • Madison Street - between Silver Avenue and Ness Avenue
  • Kensington Street - between Silver Avenue and Ness Avenue

Parking and traffic restrictions will include:

  • reducing westbound traffic on Ness Avenue to:
  • two lanes from Madison Avenue to Century Street
  • one lane (Century Street to Berry Street)
  • turning restrictions on Century Street around Ness
  • local access only on Kensington Street and Madison Street

At least one lane of eastbound and westbound traffic will be maintained at all times.

Residents can find more information on the project, including a map illustrating the traffic restrictions, at City of Winnipeg - Water and Waste Overflow Relief Projects
