Winnipeg, MB - Hot, sunny days will be more fun next summer in three Winnipeg communities that are now scheduled to get new spray pads, Local Government Minister Ron Lemieux announced today.
“Water activities can be the best part of outdoor summer fun and spray pads provide flat surfaces that are easily accessible for children of all ages and abilities,” said Lemieux. “We are pleased to partner with the city on these important infrastructure projects. Parks and playgrounds provide safe places for children and families to gather. These new facilities will also be an exciting and attractive asset to their communities.”
New spray pads are planned for the Waverley Heights Community Centre, Gateway Recreation Centre and Lindsay Wilson Park in Island Lakes. The province will provide up to $1.5 million from the Building Manitoba Fund for the construction cost of these three spray pads and the city will fund the operating costs of each new facility.
“As we see our city grow, so does the need to provide recreational amenities such as spray pads in our communities,” said Justin Swandel, Councillor for St. Norbert. “We are pleased to partner with the province to make this family friendly spray pad available to the people who call Waverley West home.”
“The Island Lakes community is thrilled that we could partner with the province to make this spray pad a reality,” said Dan Vandal, Councillor for St. Boniface. “It will provide generations with a place to play and have fun that is located close to home.”
“This new spray pad will be a welcome addition to our community,” said Jeff Browaty, Councillor for North Kildonan. “It will provide many years of fun and recreation for families, especially during those summer days when kids need a place to keep cool.”
“The splash pad in Southdale will be a tremendous asset to our community,” said Advanced Education and Literacy Minister Erin Selby. “Families in Southdale and the surrounding area will have a great place to gather with their children and enjoy free, family-oriented entertainment.”
Construction of the three new spray pads is expected to begin in the spring of 2014.
