Winnipeg, MB - City of Winnipeg crews have been repairing potholes since mid-February, and patching efforts have been significantly ramped-up this week to make repairs city-wide.
Eleven crews are currently working on Priority 1 and Priority 2 streets. Patching efforts include six pothole patching machines (Road Patchers) and five hand-asphalting crews that are working in all areas of the city to facilitate the timely repair of potholes.
"The City has increased pothole patching resources to make repairs as quickly as possible to improve roadway conditions," said Miles Watsko, Acting Manager of the Streets Maintenance Division. "At this time of year when we are experiencing numerous freeze/thaw cycles and potholes are starting to appear on city streets, it is important to remember that the number of potholes is directly related to the weather we receive. Although the pothole situation appears to be about the same as last year at this time, the situation can potentially change if the weather becomes unfavourable."
Public Works is monitoring road conditions closely and will be focusing patching efforts on main routes, bus routes and collector streets, particularly in curb lanes where water and snow melt run-off may accumulate.
Citizens are encouraged to report pothole locations by contacting 311, open 24 hours every day, by phone at 311 or by email at 311@winnipeg.ca.
The City would like to remind the motorists and pedestrians to use caution around crews and heavy equipment operating throughout the city over the coming weeks.
