Transit-Oriented Development Handbook recognized

WINNIPEG, MB - The City of Winnipeg received the Manitoba Planning Award of Excellence today for its Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Handbook. The award was presented at the Manitoba Planning Conference being held in Winnipeg this week.

"This achievement and recognition is well-deserved as our planners work very hard to ensure we are prepared to meet the needs of our citizens and communities as we continue to grow as a city," said Councillor Jeff Browaty, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development.

The TOD Handbook is a high-level framework document that guides and facilitates mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented, infill development along rapid transit corridors and high-frequency transit corridors. This is based on best practices, lessons learned from other jurisdictions, and contains multiple case studies.

Endorsed by City Council in February 2012, this document is one of the 'implementation documents' identified in OurWinnipeg’s Complete Communities Direction Strategy. The TOD Handbook is a synthesis of “best practice” TOD principles to assist policymakers, developers, the Public Service, and members of the public in Winnipeg to facilitate the broader implementation of TOD.

This is the second year in a row the City of Winnipeg has received this prestigious award. In 2012, OurWinnipeg, the City’s long range planning document, won this same award. The OurWinnipeg initiative also won a national award for city planning from the Canadian Institute of Planners in July 2011.

The Manitoba Planning Excellence Awards acknowledge individuals, organizations, companies, Manitoba municipalities and planning districts in their efforts to enhance communities through innovative and high quality planning initiatives. The Awards promote outstanding planning practice deliberately guided by and supporting sustainable development principles in Manitoba communities.
