Salting and sanding of streets continuing around-the-clock to improve traction

Motorists are urged to slow down due to extreme winter driving conditions

WINNIPEG, MB - City of Winnipeg salting and sanding trucks are continuing to work around-the-clock to improve traction on roadways throughout the city. With a blizzard in the forecast for Winnipeg, it is anticipated that road and sidewalk conditions will deteriorate throughout the day and tonight. Residents are urged to adjust their driving behaviour by making allowances for winter driving conditions.

“With a large number of pieces of heavy equipment out on the roadways and reduced visibility due to high winds, we are asking motorists to use extra care and caution,” said Ken Boyd, Manager of Streets Maintenance.

Drivers are advised to factor in additional travel time to get to destinations, slow down to a safe travel speed for winter conditions, and allow appropriate stopping distances. Pedestrians are reminded to use proper winter footwear and use caution when walking on sidewalks.

Currently there are over 25 spreader trucks on city streets addressing conditions. Once snow starts to accumulate later today, a truck plowing operation will be initiated on main routes, bus routes and collector streets to keep streets clear and passable.

The public is reminded that the Annual Snow Route Parking Ban remains in effect from December 1 to March 1, and vehicles are prohibited from parking on designated snow routes between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. Vehicles parked in violation of the annual snow route parking ban will receive a ticket in the amount of $100 ($50 if paid early), and may be towed to the towing company's compound.

If additional parking bans are required in the coming days, the public will be advised through the media, on winnipeg.ca or by contacting 311, open 24 hours every day, by phone at 311 or by email at 311@winnipeg.ca
